How is type 2 diabetes diagnosed?
Type 1 or type 2 diabetes can usually be diagnosed in the early stages by a simple blood test. The type of diabetes that you have is determined through a combination of your symptoms: your body type and the results of a fasting blood sugar (glucose) test. An oral glucose tolerance test may also be conducted to determine whether type 2 diabetes has developed or not.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common type and accounts for 90% of all cases. It’s normally diagnosed in patients who are aged over 40 years who are obese.
How to deal with type 2 diabetes?
While type 2 diabetes is a lifelong condition, there are several ways to manage it and, if you are at risk for type 2 diabetes, to prevent it altogether.
A healthy diet and lifestyle can be very effective in preventing (or managing) type 2 diabetes. Avoiding processed foods and refined carbohydrates can really help type 2 diabetics to manage their blood glucose levels significantly. Studies have also shown that type 2 diabetics who exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet can significantly reduce the need for blood sugar-lowering drugs.
As previously mentioned, healthy diet and regular exercise are the cornerstone of type 2 diabetes prevention, but they are not enough if you have type 2 diabetes.
After all, type 2 diabetes is a disease in which the body doesn’t properly use insulin. Insulin is the hormone responsible for converting sugar and starch from the food that we eat into energy.
If you have type 2 diabetes, you may find that after eating foods rich in natural sugar called fructose (found in fruits), or starchy carbohydrates like white rice, or sugary foods that your blood sugar level is higher than it should be.
Natural health supplements for type 2 diabetes
There are four herbs and two supplements that can help type 2 diabetics better control their blood sugar levels.
Herb #1: Gymnema Sylvestre. This herb has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for more than 2,000 years and is gaining popularity in the U.S. because it has been shown to significantly reduce blood sugar levels and reduce the type 2 diabetes symptoms: frequent urination, thirstiness, hunger, and fatigue. Gymnema Sylvestre contains a chemical called gymnemic acid, which is one of the most potent herbs for type 2 diabetes.
Herbs #2 and #3: Guggul and cinnamon.
Guggul reduces triglycerides, cholesterol, and body weight, while cinnamon helps regulate blood sugar and triglyceride levels and reduces cholesterol. The type 2 diabetes herbs guggul and cinnamon also come from India, but they have been around longer than Gymnema Sylvestre and Forskolin. Both of these type 2 diabetes herbs have been used in Ayurvedic medicine for more than 5,000 years, and they have a type 2 diabetes study showing that guggul lowered blood sugar levels while cinnamon also reduced fasting glucose and hemoglobin A1C (an indicator of type 2 diabetes).
The last herb in our list is the banaba leaf.
Herb #4: Banaba leaf. This is an herbal supplement that comes from the banaba tree. Studies have shown that this supplement can help type 2 diabetics to overcome high blood sugar levels by improving insulin response.
If you’re type 2 diabetic, then you might be interested in the type 2 diabetes supplement alpha lipoic acid.
Alpha lipoic acid has type 2 diabetes benefits and is found naturally in the body, but you are likely deficient because it is processed and excreted as quickly as it is created.
There are type 2 diabetes studies that have not only found alpha lipoic acid to be helpful in type 2 diabetes management, but also type 1 diabetes. Some type 1 and type 2 diabetes doctors have been prescribing alpha lipoic acid for type 2 diabetes because it has been shown to slow the loss of insulin-producing cells and increase the amount of insulin that type 2 diabetics can produce.
Alpha lipoic acid also improves type 2 diabetes symptoms and helps type 2 diabetics better regulate blood sugar levels, by helping the pancreas produce more insulin and reducing the type 2 diabetes risk of complications such as neuropathy, retinopathy, or cardiovascular disease.
The type 2 diabetes supplement alpha lipoic acid works by turning type 2 diabetes type 1 genes on and type 2 diabetes type 2 genes off. This is an important type 2 diabetes benefit because type 1 and type 2 diabetes are the result of both genetics and lifestyle.
The last type 2 diabetes supplement is chromium picolinate.
Chromium is an essential nutrient that plays an important role in the body’s glucose metabolism. Without adequate amounts of chromium, type 2 diabetics will struggle to reduce their blood sugar levels.
All these natural health supplement ingredients have been shown to help type 2 diabetics to reduce their blood sugar levels naturally. These natural health supplement ingredients may be a good choice for type 2 diabetics who want to manage their type 2 diabetes effectively and naturally.
